I’m in college and I need an Informative topic for Speech 101 class and I really want to do it on Smallville (it’s about Superman as a teenager ). But my mom is telling me that I shouldn’t do that because all of that stuff is made up ( the people, his powers, krypton, kryptonite, kryptonian language and so on). But I don’t think that should matter because I would be informing about the show… am I wrong?

    You are not.
The topic by itself is not that important. The only thing that matters is “credibility” )
The audience should get your point

Have you tried to look through the whole website ?
    There are hundreds of ideas…

  4. Christina says:

Maybe my opinion is biased because I am a creative writer, but I am fourteen and I can find copious amounts of things to speak of within each of these topics. Remember to break each thing down into minuscule pieces before you start writing… Ex: How to make a hot dog [Or veggie dog, I recommend]
    1. Buying the supplies.
    a. Buns
    b. Brands of hot dogs [or soy alternatives]
    c. Condiments

    2. Methods of cooking
    a. Boiling
    b. Baking…
    c. Frying
    d. BBQ

There is so much more I could elaborate on, simply talking about hot dogs! I realize this wasn’t a topic, but I wouldn’t want to do somebody’s work now, would I?

I think writing about anything that can be researched is a great topic. You’ll need references, so find something with lots of facts and that you can break it down so the audience can absorb it…you’ll feel more comfortable presenting it.

I believe if you pick topics that you are somewhat familiar with, speaking about it will be “easier.” I love to cook, garden, craft, sports, etc., so for my speech topic, I will either speak about the art of making yeast bread(and bring in some “visuals” of warm loaves) or how to decoupage(craft). Both topics I partake of and I will actually find joy in researching. If you play sports, have a certain hobby, speak a foreign language…the topics are endless! Don’t forget some form of visuals, too. Powerpoint or something tangible that the audience can view. Finally, practice, practice, practice! Don’t wait until the night before to work on your speech! It will come across to the audience as just that.

Take a deep breath, good luck and have fun!
